The city of Münster is divided into six very unequal districts.
They are dominated by the Münster-Mitte district, which has roughly as many inhabitants as the Hiltrup, Nord, Ost & Süd-Ost districts combined. Each of these districts has its own district council (Bezirksvertretung) with 19 district councillors, all of whom receive a monthly allowance for their voluntary political office.
Helene Goldbeck, councillor and the Volt council group's spokesperson for planning policy, has a clear opinion on this:
“We need a reform of the city districts before the 2025 local elections. The current division into districts no longer makes sense for a Münster that has grown, and must therefore be adjusted.”
Volt has therefore submitted a question to Lord Mayor Markus Lewe so that a first step can be taken in this process.
Philip Maurice, district councillor in Münster-West, explains:
“The city of Bonn manages perfectly well with four district councils. We have attached a proposal to our question to reduce the number of district councils by two. This alone would allow the city of Münster to save more than €100,000 a year in allowances. Money that is lacking elsewhere.”
