It is not only the events of the last few hours that point to a worsening of the situation in Ukraine. We expect a large number of people seeking protection, to whom we want to offer the best possible reception through forward-looking planning. The Volt council group has submitted a question to the Lord Mayor about the city's preparations.
Tim Pasch, spokesperson for the council group, comments on the question:
“The latest developments in Ukraine are to be condemned. Besides appeals and sanctions, however, we in Münster above all need to focus on preparing to provide appropriate accommodation and support for a large number of refugees. To avoid centralised accommodation, close cooperation with the municipalities in the Münsterland is needed.”
Helene Goldbeck adds:
“As many families and children are to be expected, the city must not only provide family-friendly accommodation but also make timely arrangements for the care and schooling of the children. A situation like that of 2015/16, when for months there were no options whatsoever for refugee children in the central emergency shelters – apart from volunteer efforts – must not be repeated.”
