Duplicate roll-out, as is happening in Wolbeck and could happen in Albachten, Roxel and Nienberge, leads to confusion and an inefficient use of resources. “The uncoordinated roll-out is causing resentment among citizens,” says Helene Goldbeck, spokesperson of the Volt council group. “We are calling for the available roll-out capacity to be used efficiently to achieve full coverage first, before further overbuild projects are started. Many districts and areas in Münster are still waiting for fibre.” The suspicion of systematic duplicate roll-out, particularly by Deutsche Telekom, makes the problem worse. A report by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) (1, 2) shows that Telekom often reacts at short notice when other providers start marketing their services, or only connects lucrative core areas. This practice torpedoes fair competition and hinders swift, comprehensive coverage. The Volt council group appeals to everyone involved, especially Stadtwerke Münster, Telekom and private companies such as DBN, to work together. “A coordinated approach is in everyone’s interest – that of citizens, businesses and the city,” stresses Miriam Stölting, a resident of Albachten. “We need joint planning to make the best use of resources and avoid unnecessary duplication of work. Nobody likes constant roadworks outside their front door.”
The Volt council group is committed to future-proof and sustainable infrastructure that meets citizens’ needs. “A coordinated and well-thought-out approach is the key to successful digitalisation and real progress,” explains H. Goldbeck. “This is the only way we can ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the advantages of the fibre network as quickly as possible.”
