Response to criticism from associations, clubs and interest groups
Yesterday the city council adopted the new integrated parking strategy. This strategy marks an important step towards improving the parking situation in our city. We expect the responsible departments to push it forward vigorously. “It is time for the city to become walkable again and for us to make smarter use of the legal parking space that already exists,” says councillor Martin Grewer. “Especially in the beautiful streets of our old town, the motto now is: dare to have fewer cars!”
In addition, the Volt council group is responding to the critical remarks made by associations, clubs and interest groups, which published a joint press release on 16 June.
Measures of equal priority and the staffing situation: The order of the measures in the draft resolution does not represent a ranking of priorities. All the proposed measures are treated as equally important and will be implemented in a targeted manner. The city administration has also confirmed this to us. However, the current staffing situation limits how quickly some measures can be implemented, particularly the creation of loading zones. We are therefore initially focusing on high-priority locations such as Warendorfer Straße and Hammer Straße. At the same time, we are calling on the administration to reduce staffing requirements by using digital monitoring systems, thereby contributing to SmartCity Münster.
Residents’ parking zones as a major bureaucratic undertaking: Setting up residents’ parking zones is a complex bureaucratic process. For each application, a detailed expert report has to be prepared that examines the current parking situation. In the case of the Kreuzviertel, where pavement parking is common (and not legally permitted), the administration has made the tendering of such a report its top priority. At the same time, processes are already under way to set up parking zones in Pluggendorf, the Erphoviertel, Hansa/Hafenviertel towards the canal and Sentruper Höhe.
The criticism that only the Kreuzviertel was explicitly named is due to the fact that implementation is already under way in other districts and does not require any further council decisions. To increase transparency, we have also included these ongoing measures in the draft resolution by means of a supplementary amendment.
We are committed to sustainable and efficient parking management and are happy to answer any questions at presse@volt-muenster.de
