Equality as the key to the city's future
Great recognition for Münster's equality policy: on 9 May 2025, at a ceremony at the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in Berlin, the city was awarded second place in the Gender Award – Kommune mit Zukunft. The Volt council group warmly congratulates the city on this success and sees it as confirmation of the committed path towards greater gender equality.
“Münster shows that equality is more than a cross-cutting issue – it is a foundation for social justice and democratic participation,” says Laura Stein, equality policy spokesperson for the Volt council group. “The award honours not only figures, concepts and strategies – it honours courage, conviction and change put into practice.”
The laudation for Münster particularly highlighted the city's strategic, participatory and sustainable equality work – from gender monitoring and measures to promote women in leadership positions to innovative concepts for LGBTIQ, gender mainstreaming and gender-equitable climate policy*. The cooperation across all of the city's specialist departments was also recognised as exemplary.
“Equality policy must not be left on the sidelines – it belongs at the heart of municipal decision-making,” Stein continues. “[The Volt council group] is committed to ensuring that this work is further strengthened, financially secured and closely linked with the voices of civil society. A fair city is a strong city.”
The Volt council group thanks the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft kommunaler Frauenbüros und Gleichstellungsstellen (BAG) for the award and also congratulates the municipalities of Magdeburg, Kleve and Verden on their placings.
