The award for the Kanalpromenade in Münster is a great success and deserves praise for the outstanding cooperation between the city administration, local politicians and the federal government.

Sebastian Kappen, cycling policy spokesperson, comments:

“However, we view with some regret the fact that pedestrians and cyclists have to share the space, which creates potential for conflict. We therefore urge everyone to show mutual consideration and take care on the new paths.

Against this background, it is important to continue supporting the planned improvement of the inner-city cycle network. Particularly important here is the use of parallel streets to concentrate cycle traffic along quiet roads, as the Netherlands has long demonstrated. The Cycle Network 2.0 (Fahrradnetz 2.0) provides an important basis for this.

In view of the goal of the mobility transition and the aim of climate neutrality by 2030, we must push ahead with expanding and promoting cycling as a sustainable mobility solution. The award for the Kanalpromenade is a first step in the right direction, but further measures are needed to make cycling safer, more attractive and more comfortable. With more space for bicycles, shorter waiting times at traffic lights, less potential for conflict with motor traffic and better-quality cycle paths, we want to promote the Leeze, as the bicycle is known in Münster, as an environmentally friendly inner-city alternative to the car, further improve the quality of life in Münster and make a positive contribution to climate protection.”
