First the concept, then the decision!
The Music Campus has been a recurring topic of discussion in Münster for many years.
It is back on the agenda right now, as a proposal from the administration is up for decision at the council meeting on Wednesday.
At its core, the proposal concerns transferring the role of developer from the BLB to individual stakeholders, rising construction costs and reduced floor space. And it concerns the next step towards realising the Music Campus, namely the launch of the architectural competition.
There has been a great deal of discussion about this proposal from the administration, and the result is an amendment from the coalition and the FDP. Its core message is: several developers are fine, and if the music school can manage with the proposed space, we are happy with that too. And: the cost ceiling remains at €70.1 million. If this is no longer enough for the cultural building, or if not enough donations come in, we would rather do without the cultural building. But we will create space for the music school and the Symphony Orchestra in any case.
The architectural competition will create a basis on which the council can weigh up the risks and opportunities. So far there is a nice idea, estimated costs and a lot of hot air. A serious decision for or against a project cannot be made on this basis.
As a council group, we would like to give the Music Campus project the chance to develop first to the point where a concept begins to take shape and reliable figures are available – and if the cultural building still fits in financially, we will gladly take it, because there is a need for space on this scale in Münster.
