The working group looked at how to ensure a sustainable redevelopment and drew inspiration from, among other things, good examples from other cities that have already proven themselves in practice. This resulted in a number of demands, such as:
Use of sustainable materials:
Building materials cause immense environmental damage during production and transport. We therefore call for the use of the most sustainable materials possible. In Amsterdam, for example, seats made of sugar cane are used instead of plastic.
Installation of solar panels:
More and more stadium roofs are fitted with solar panels. Volt calls for all available surfaces at the Preußenstadion to be used as well. In combination with green electricity, the stadium should in future be run on 100% renewable energy.
Economical water consumption:
The stadium needs not only more but also more sustainable sanitary facilities. Flow regulators on washbasins, waterless urinals and rainwater tanks can help.
Many stadiums are leading by example. The English fifth-tier club Forest Green Rovers, for instance, will soon be playing in a stadium made of wood, and TSG Hoffenheim in a zero-waste stadium. The city of Münster should also contribute to sustainable construction when redeveloping the Preußenstadion. Perhaps people will soon be saying: a stadium renovation the Münster way.
